Tennis is one of the most popular sport in the world, the type of tennis match depends on the number and gender of individuals playing the game.
This tennis sport is also lawn tennis from of its origin. Tennis matches are on different surfaces, ranging from the grass-court, clay courts, hard courts, and artificial courts.
Furthermore, the type of surface in a tennis game goes a long way in determining the game’s style and pace.
A game played on a grass court is a lot faster than other courts because the ball bounces quicker and is not easy to predict.
Aside from football and basketball, I believe tennis is the third most popular sport globally. So many great players are making an impact on the tennis courts.
Players like Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Karolina Pliskova, Dominic Thiem, Dani Medvedev, Elise Mertens, Naomi Osaka, Arya Sabalenka.
Auger Bautista Agut, Daniel Evans, Andy Murray, Ons Jabeur, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, Francis Tiafoe, Ashleigh Barty, Garbine Muguruza and many others are giving us entertainment in the tennis world.
In addition, tennis is a sporting event having the male categories, the female categories, the double category, and the mixed double type.
Types of Tennis Match
Tennis is an exciting game traditionally played between two or four players in a single and double match and double match, respectively.
Tennis is a very tedious sport that you have to be in good condition to win; in a single game, it is you and your Racket that will determine if you will win, unlike other sports like football, basketball, volleyball where one can still rely on a team to win a match.
There are majorly three types of tennis matches: Singles, Doubles, and Mixed doubles.
1. Singles
Singles is one of the types of tennis matches. It involves two players competing against each other. The inner court line from the left and right sides is used in singles tennis matches.
Furthermore, the singles tennis match has the men and the women tournament separately. In addition, the men’s game is what is known as the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
This ATP sees all the happening in men’s tennis; they make rules and rank the players based on their performance. Furthermore, as of Dec 2021, Novak Djokovic leads the men’s tennis ranking.
Followed by Daniil Medvedev, who has an excellent tennis year in 2021. Next in line at third is the talented Alexander Zverev.
Women Tennis Association (WTA) sees to the affairs of women tennis. Like the ATP also, they are involved in ranking the women players.
As of Dec 2021, Ashleigh Barty, the Australian tennis player, leads the women’s ranking. Followed closely by Aryna Sabalenka and Garbine Muguruza.
Furthermore, all this ranking tends to change based on each player’s performance, especially in the major tournaments.
Singles Is the most common and the most-watched tennis across the world. Players that play singles are the most popular, making singles the best tennis match.
2. Doubles
Doubles is a type of tennis match involving two teams, each team involving two men or two women.
This type of match uses the outer court line, unlike the singles that use the inner court. Both sets of competing players are in the courts while serving and defending serves. They play tennis together as one, and they win or lose together as a team.
Furthermore, like the singles, the Association of Tennis professionals regulates the events in double men’s games. Women tennis Association governs the women’s dual match.
The current men’s double ranking has Mate Pavic in number one position, followed by Nikola Mektic, PPavic’steammate in number two.
Joe Salisbury takes the number three position with his teammates Rajeev Ram. Rajeev followed joe by taking the fourth number position in the Men to double ranking.
However, in the women’s double Ranking, Katerina Siniakova takes the first position. Barbora Krejikova followed her in the second position. Su-Wei Hsieh takes the next place, followed by Elise Mertens at the number four position.
Furthermore, the most exciting part about tennis matches is that some players can compete in both the singles and the doubles in tournaments.
For example, if the US Open is on, a player can compete for both at the singles level. They can also team up with another player to compete in the doubles.
3. Mixed doubles
A mixed double is the last type of tennis match. This type of tennis match is similar to the doubles, with the only difference being that we have one man and one woman in a team, competing for another group of one woman and a man.
This tennis match is not the most common because the men’s and women’s tours are organized separately by the Association of Tennis Professional and Women Tennis associations, respectively.
People don’t watch it, and most tennis players prefer to compete in the singles and doubles. Players receive more money while competing in the single, followed by double, and the least is the mixed double.
These are the three types of tennis matches that players compete in at the professional or the ITF levels. The other type of tennis matches are. Canadian double, which involves three players also similar to the Australian doubles.
Wheelchair tennis players compete in both singles and double matches by players on the wheelchair. The main difference in wheelchair tennis is that the ball can bounce twice before hitting.
Visually impaired tennis, also known as blind tennis, is used by a particular ball that makes sound upon contact with the court. The net used in visually impaired tennis is lower than standard tennis.
Furthermore, up to three bounces of the ball are allowed before returning the ball.
