1. Trick or Treat (1952)

YouTube video

This recent Disney plus short is the ideal Halloween treat in bite-sized form.

Huey, Dewey, and Louie appear in this 8-minute-plus Donald Duck short while sporting their well-known Halloween costumes. The story revolves around a witch named Witch Hazel.

Who aids the boys in exacting revenge on Donald (who has heavily leaned toward the “trick” portion of trick-or-treating).

Trick or Treat is also an endlessly charming short ideal for your Halloween programming.

It features gorgeous Technicolor animation and strong direction from Jack Hannah.

Who directed the similarly spooky Disney quick “The Old Mill” several years earlier, and backgrounds and layout by Yale Gracey.

However, he would later become an Imagineer and contribute many of the effects and “illusions” to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. This is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

2. Coco (2017)

YouTube video

A little boy named Miguel tells the tale of how he aspires to be a musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz.

Eager to showcase his musical prowess, Miguel ends up in the Land of the Dead, where he meets Hector the Trickster.

Furthermore, to discover the real meaning of Miguel’s family name, Miguel and Hector set off on a quest.

The Day of the Dead event has nothing to do with Halloween. But it’s an excellent movie to watch the evening before November 1. Also, Coco is one of the best Halloween movies available on Disney plus.

3. Hocus Pocus (1993)

YouTube video

You’re seriously missing out if you haven’t seen this movie yet. In an abandoned house that Max (Omri Katz), his sister Dani (Thora Birch), and their friend Allison (Vinessa Shaw) explore, Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson, three terrible witches, are unintentionally released (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy).

After that, the children must steal the witches’ spell book to prevent the Sanderson sisters from becoming immortal.

4. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (2016)

YouTube video

Tim Burton’s 2016 version of the well-known young adult fantasy novel reminds him of the outstanding director he once was.

Even though his recent works have been pretty uninspiring, a little boy named Jake (Asa Butterfield) travels to see Miss Peregrine (Eva Green).

The headmistress of a private home that he has heard about in bedtime stories in this horror-themed X-Men adaptation.

Furthermore, Children with exceptional abilities live at Miss Peregrine’s home.

The qualities that Burton excels at are demonstrated in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children; he is sympathetic to characters who feel “strange” and enables them to discover a community that accepts them.

5. Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

YouTube video

Sisters Sanderson are back in action! The witches are revived after two Salem teenagers, Whitney Peak and Belissa Escobedo, ignite another Black Flame Candle 29 years after their previous night of mischief.

In this adored cult classic, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reprise their iconic roles without missing a beat, and newcomers Hannah Waddingham and Tony Hale carve out their niches.

Hocus Pocus 2 turns out to be an emotional tale about the strength of sisterhood and is a sequel that is as entertaining as the first one. This video is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

YouTube video

Although there is still considerable disagreement on whether this movie is a Christmas or Halloween movie, we think it’s fantastic to see at any time of year.

Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, chooses to visit Christmas Town after growing weary of the same old frightening attractions in Halloween Town. When he does, he is astounded by what he discovers.

7. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

YouTube video

In a quest for his place in the world, when an inventor (Vincent Price) dies before giving his humanoid invention hands.

Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) sets out for Suburbia with Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest).

The movie marked the start of Depp and Burton’s partnership and balanced the magical with Burton’s signature gothic style.

With a unique gothic persona as its backdrop, Edward Scissorhands is a movie about love, conformity, and accepting diversity.

8. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949): The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow

YouTube video

You only care about the second half of this two-film unique feature, which clocks in at 68 minutes and was made during the company’s lean post-World War II years.

The second is devoted to “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” based on the well-known Washington Irving tale about a schoolteacher.

Named Ichabod Crane, he travels to the upstate New York town of Sleepy Hollow and is frightened to death by the terrifying Headless Horseman.

The movie follows the short’s identical plot beats. Furthermore, it resolves everything in a similarly non-supernatural way.

Yet, it nonetheless packs a punch and features chilling images like the Horseman charging across the bridge with a burning pumpkin in his hand. This video is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

9. The Haunted Mansion (2003)

YouTube video

Eddie Murphy’s character is real estate agent Jim Evers. And his family ends up stopping at a spooky mansion while on vacation.

You can find unique details about the legendary and stylish villain’s life.

11. Into The Woods (2014)

YouTube video

Meryl Streep’s witch forces a childless baker and his wife to embark on a three-day quest to obtain magical artifacts from well-known fairy tales like Cinderella.

Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack & the Beanstalk. Moreover, James Corden and Emily Blunt play the couple.

Naturally, things don’t turn out as expected. Into th wood is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

12. Gargoyles (1994)

YouTube video

The company’s first 30-minute animated drama was titled Gargoyles.

And the main characters were a group of medieval soldiers who had spent a thousand years imprisoned in stone.

Now that they have been revived, they are fighting crime and other monsters and attempting to uncover the enigmatic causes of their resurrection in contemporary New York City.

The show addressed several serious issues, not just those of the supernatural kind.

The gargoyles themselves were quite frightening (one of the most infamous and widely praised episodes dealt with an accidental shooting).

However, if you haven’t seen it before, you should give in because the first two seasons have a very eerie, Halloween-like vibe (the third season, which took control away from the original producers and is a wash and should be skipped).

Beautiful animation and an intricate plot make it easily on par with a comparable, more well-known dramatic animated series.

13. Frankenweenie (2012)

YouTube video

Tim Burton kept himself busy with tasks that wouldn’t need him to create cutesy creatures when he was toiling away at Walt Disney Animation.

The first was a stop-motion short honoring Vincent Price, and the second was a live-action half-hour special about a young kid who brings his dead dog back to life.

Years later, after earning $1 billion for Disney with his reimagined Alice in Wonderland, Burton returned to the subject and, unbelievably, transformed it into the stop-motion black-and-white animated film Frankenweenie.

14. The Scream Team (2002)

YouTube video

There are numerous Disney Channel Original Movies (or DCOMs) with horror themes, such as Phantom of the Megaplex, Girl vs. Monster, and Don’t Look Under the Bed. (You might also include more current franchises like Zombies and Descendants in this group, though the focus in those films is more on music than monsters.)

But few were as popular as The Scream Team, a DCOM with an astonishingly remarkable ensemble that includes Tommy Davidson, Eric Idle, Kathy Najimy, and a teenage Kat Dennings, and one with a more refined style (obviously inspired by works like Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners).

Furthermore, The story revolves around a decent family who, after the passing of their adored grandfather, move into a rickety old house and uncover a murky plan involving ghosts who haven’t yet passed on and an evil spirit who killed his wife.

The fact that things can become rather intense ideally balances the more extended periods. We’re grateful that The Scream Team is on Disney+ and ready for rediscovery, even though it’s unclear why it didn’t enjoy the same sort of cult status that some of the other, sillier DCOMs did. This movie is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

15. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

YouTube video

One big, brassy animated epic created during the so-called Disney Renaissance was The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

In addition, it is the only animated film to have a horrifyingly malformed character initially portrayed by Lon Chaney and to feature what is possibly the most gruesome animated musical performance in the studio’s history (hello, “Hellfire!”).

Furthermore, three gargoyles are either terrifying or adorable, depending on your point of view. It must have taken even more guts to approve of the levels of darkness present, including a lengthy sequence where our heroes enter a terrifying gypsy underworld.

It was undoubtedly a giant leap for Disney to transform this source material—a singularly bleak novel by Victor Hugo—into an upbeat Broadway-style musical.

16. Under Wraps (2021)

YouTube video

Amazon still hosts the 1997 original, but Disney+ launched a brand-new Under Wraps remake last year. A group of friends unintentionally resuscitate a mummy that they discover in a neighbor’s basement, which is reminiscent of the plot of the original Disney Channel Original Movie.

Will they deliver him back to his final resting place by Halloween midnight? When you learn the answer, queue for the newest sequel, Under Wraps 2.

17. Toy Story of Terror! (2014)

YouTube video

When Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the Toy Story gang have a flat tire and have to spend the night at a “haunted” rural motel, their road trip takes an unexpected turn.

Everyone finds themselves in a succession of weird happenings after one toy disappears. This movie is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

18. Monsters University (2013)

YouTube video

Even though we know how they first met at Monsters University, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, also known as “Sulley,” are back at it.

Mike has aspirations of becoming a scarer, but during his first semester at MU, his goals are dashed when he meets a natural-born hotshot named “Sulley” and is forced to participate in the competitive Scare program.

19. Maleficent (2019)

YouTube video

Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) assumes the lead role as the defender of a woodland kingdom and is based on the criminal figure from Sleeping Beauty.

After casting a curse on a young princess, the woman learns that the child might be the only one who can help her country be restored.

As a result, a complex relationship develops that will have you reconsider one of Disney’s most recognizable villains. This movie is one of the best Halloween movies on Hulu.

20. Halloweentown (1998)

YouTube video

Halloweentown is the most dominating DCOM dedicated to the holiday. Halloween gave rise to a whole franchise, including Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown High.

Some of the children in the film decide to follow their grandmother (Debbie Reynolds, who hits all the right notes) after she makes her yearly trip for Halloween.

Furthermore, they board a bus that appears to be filled with costumed adults, but when they get off, they learn they have arrived in Halloweentown, a place full of ghouls, goblins, witches, and warlocks (there is also a talking skeleton cab driver). This spooky is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.

21. Mighty Joe Young (1998)

YouTube video

Mighty Joe Young was Disney’s entry (one of their few out-and-out monster movies) and is somewhat of an underrated gem.

It was a part of the late 1990s giant monster movie boom that included Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Roland Emmerich’s Godzilla (both of which were developed in the late 1990s but released in 2005).

This well-intentioned adventure is about a gigantic gorilla and a wicked poacher who swears retribution stars Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron.

The plot isn’t particularly noteworthy, but some pretty exciting action set pieces are reminiscent of Tremors director Ron Underwood’s work.

Furthermore, the Mighty Joe Young himself is a genuinely remarkable cinematic creation, expressive and menacing, given to living by the fantastic abilities of Rick Baker and Industrial Light & Magic. This film is one of the best Halloween movies on Disney plus.
